The Paragon organised a
series Searles Road Community Safety meetings in 2007
following a series of muggings and burglaries.
The meetings were attended
by residents from The Paragon, Wooster Place and both
sections of Searles Road as well as the Police Safer
Neighbourhood Team, Cllrs Jane Salmon (East Walworth)
and Tim McNally (Chaucer) as well as Simon Hughes - MP
for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.
The result was a
mandate for:
- better street
lighting
- an application for
Council Cleaner Greener Safer funds to add gates and
lighting to Paragon Gardens
- CCTV if the above
measures and police action did not address the
issue.
Cllr Jane Salmon
arranged for the lighting in Searles Road to be renewed
with brighter, white, lighting. The SNT apprehended the
perpetrators/gang who were committing the robberies and
the problem seems to have gone away, therefore the CCTV
option was not pursued.
Liza Drew for the PMC
and on behalf of all residents of Searles Road applied
for £40,000 of 2007-08 Southwark Cleaner, Green,
Safer money to do additional lighting and gates in
Paragon Gardens - Cllr Jane Salmon championed this and
it was subsequently awarded.
The Mouchel Group are
currently preparing a design for the Park in concert
with the overall £1.6 Million Streets-for-People scheme
for the overall Salisbury Row area which covers from
Rodney Road to the New Kent Road, including Searles
Road. |
